Innovation from ROTHENBERGER replaces two plastic pipe shears

Precise cut for pipes up to 42 mm diameter with the ROCUT 42 Twin Cut

Until now, anyone working within the plumbing, heating and air-conditioning industry will know cutting plastic pipe requires various pipe shears depending on the pipe diameter, as well as material. The latest tool innovation from ROTHENBERGER, manufacturer of pipe tools and pipe processing equipment, replaces the need for two separate shears, thanks to its unique 2-in-1 function: The ROCUT 42 Twin Cut plastic pipe shears cuts pipe in direct or ratchet cut. Automatically switching between the two functions, the new model can cut pipe up to 42 mm in diameter using the most appropriate method. This makes cutting faster than using a standard ratchet cut shear. A PTFE blade coating reduces friction between the pipe and blade thus, allowing the ROCUT 42 Twin Cut to shear through most plastic pipe, including multilayer, with minmum effort required.

“Market analyses show that pipes of different materials up to 42 mm diameter, which require several pairs of shears, are habitually used on construction sites. The cutting result determines how quickly the installation progresses; slanting cuts and deformed pipes make time-consuming rework necessary,” explains Suzanna Bender, product manager at ROTHENBERGER. “On this basis, we developed the new ROCUT 42 Twin Cut plastic pipe shears together with installers”.

To be able to cut small and large pipe diameters optimally, the ROCUT 42 Twin Cut has both a direct cut, and ratchet cut function. The direct cut is suitable for small pipe diameters or thin-walled pipes; the pipe can be cut easily and quickly in one stroke. The ratchet cut function is ideal for larger or particularly thick-walled pipes, making it simple and fast to cut, using minimum effort.

As the ratchet cut is only used when needed, craftspeople save significant time on the job. Tests with professional users have shown that up to 80% of time can be saved when cutting smaller pipe diameters compared to cutting with ratchet cut only shears.

The shears automatically switch to ratchet mode when the pressure on the non-slip coated handle briefly decreases. “This function, which is patent pending, is completely unique. That is why we make a point of users trying it out for themselves,” explains Bender. “So we developed a packaging in which the shears can be tested. You have to be able to experience innovations to understand how great they are.”

The v-shaped blade of the ROCUT 42 Twin Cut is PTFE-coated. This reduces the amount of force required for cutting compared to the previous model, the ROCUT TC 42: “Users need to apply around 20% less force than when cutting with the ROCUT TC 42, as internal tests have shown,” says Bender. The coating reduces friction during cutting, making the cutting process more effortless.

The PTFE coating and the v-shape of the blade also help to reduce deformation of the tube, reducing the need for rework. “Recalibration is annoying and costs time,” says Bender. However, “due to the v-shape of the blade, the shears only exert pressure on one point on the pipe, thus enabling better results”.

The shears can be opened with a reset lever. This lever can be operated from both sides of the shears, so that both left- and right-handed people can equally work with the shears easily. “This means that left-handed people no longer have to change hands, but can open the shears directly, insert the pipe and cut. A small but important detail,” says Bender.
